Modern hyperprolific sows are capable of producing larger litters than ever before, but this achievement has come with new metabolic challenges. Among them, ketosis remains one of the most underestimated and underdiagnosed conditions affecting sow performance during the transition period.

While ketosis is widely recognized in dairy cattle, its importance in swine production is often overlooked. However, growing evidence suggests that excessive ketone body production during late gestation and early lactation can negatively impact feed intake, body condition, milk production, piglet growth, and overall reproductive performance.

Understanding ketosis and implementing appropriate nutritional strategies can help producers improve sow robustness and maximize litter performance.

What is ketosis?

Ketosis is a metabolic condition that develops when energy requirements exceed energy intake. In response to this energy deficit, the sow mobilizes body fat reserves to supply fuel for vital functions.

Fat mobilization releases non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) into the bloodstream. These fatty acids are transported to the liver, where they are either completely oxidized for energy or converted into ketone bodies, primarily β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA).

Ketone bodies are not inherently harmful. In fact, they represent a normal adaptive mechanism that allows the animal to cope with temporary energy shortages. Problems arise when fat mobilization becomes excessive and ketone body production exceeds the sow’s capacity to utilize them efficiently.

This situation is particularly common during the late gestation and early lactation period, when the metabolic demands of fetal growth, colostrum production, and milk synthesis increase dramatically.

Why are modern sows at greater risk?

Today’s hyperprolific sows face a unique physiological challenge.

During the last weeks of gestation, fetal growth accelerates rapidly, increasing nutrient requirements. At the same time, voluntary feed intake often declines as abdominal space becomes limited.

Immediately after farrowing, the situation becomes even more demanding. Milk production increases sharply while feed intake requires several days to reach its maximum potential. This creates a period of negative energy balance in which body reserves are heavily mobilized.

If this imbalance persists, the sow enters a vicious cycle:

As ketosis progresses, liver function may become compromised due to excessive fat accumulation, further reducing the animal’s ability to adapt metabolically.

Why should producers be concerned?

Recent studies in hyperprolific sows have demonstrated that elevated BHBA concentrations are associated with several undesirable outcomes:

Greater body fat and muscle mobilization

Increased incidence of postpartum hypophagia

Reduced body condition during lactation

Lower piglet growth rates

Higher stillbirth rates

Increased occurrence of neonatal digestive disorders

Importantly, many affected sows do not show obvious clinical signs. This means that subclinical ketosis can silently reduce productivity without attracting attention on the farm.

For this reason, ketosis should not be viewed as an isolated metabolic disorder, but rather as an indicator of inadequate adaptation to the transition period.

Because subclinical ketosis often goes unnoticed, monitoring becomes essential.

The most practical biomarker currently available is β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), which can be measured directly in blood using portable ketone meters.

Although no universally accepted threshold exists for swine, elevated BHBA concentrations indicate increased fat mobilization and metabolic stress.

For a more complete assessment of energy status, BHBA can be combined with additional biomarkers such as:

NEFA (non-esterified fatty acids)

Blood glucose

<li data-section-id="vrcj7s" data-start="5087" these parameters around farrowing provides valuable information about the metabolic resilience of the sow herd and helps identify animals at risk before performance losses become visible.

<hr key to prevention

The most effective approach to ketosis is prevention.

The objective is not simply to reduce ketone body production, but to improve the sow’s overall metabolic adaptation during the transition period.

An effective strategy should focus on four main goals:

Increase glucose availability

Reduce excessive fat mobilization.

This requires a combination of complementary ingredients rather than a single one

LIPROTEC: A comprehensive combination approach

Our formulation has been specifically designed to support sows during periods of high metabolic demand.

Propylene Glycol

Propylene glycol is one of the most effective glucogenic precursors available in animal nutrition.

After absorption, it is rapidly converted into glucose precursors by the liver, helping improve energy availability and reducing the need for excessive fat mobilization.

By supporting glucose production, propylene glycol contributes to lower ketone body formation and improved metabolic adaptation.

Sorbitol

Sorbitol provides an additional source of readily available energy while supporting normal digestive and hepatobiliary function.

Its well-known choleretic properties promote bile flow and facilitate lipid metabolism, helping the liver cope with increased metabolic demands during the peripartum period.

Lysine

Lysine is the first limiting amino acid in most swine diets and plays a critical role in protein synthesis, milk production, and maintenance of lean tissue.

Adequate lysine supply helps reduce excessive muscle mobilization and supports productive performance during lactation.

Botanical Liver Support

The formulation also includes a carefully selected blend of botanical extracts traditionally recognized for their hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties.

During periods of intense fat mobilization, the liver becomes a critical organ for maintaining metabolic balance. Supporting hepatic function helps optimize nutrient utilization and contributes to overall metabolic resilience.

Supporting the modern sow

As litter sizes continue to increase, nutritional management during the transition period becomes increasingly important.

Ketosis should no longer be considered a rare or isolated condition. Rather, it should be viewed as a warning sign that the sow is struggling to meet the metabolic demands of reproduction and lactation.

By combining glucogenic energy sources, essential amino acids, and liver-supporting botanical ingredients, producers can help sows maintain energy balance, support feed intake, preserve body condition, and improve overall productivity.

The transition period represents one of the greatest challenges in modern swine production. Providing targeted nutritional support during this critical window can make the difference between merely surviving the transition and thriving through it.

Over the last two decades, genetic progress has transformed sow productivity.
